KOHLER Uninterruptible Power (KUP) recently beat stiff competition from the UK’s top suppliers of UPS systems and were chosen to replace two existing uninterruptible power supplies for one of the UK’s largest and most respected financial services institutions. The UPS units in question support critical back office systems that are required to perform all manner of customer service operations. This includes the organisation’s call centres and related IT infrastructure, which must be available to its 13 million customers across the country 24/7.
Following a series of conversations and a review of current levels of UPS power protection, KUP also recommended adding five new smaller UPS systems to provide dedicated power protection for the network of desktop PCs at each of the business’ call centres. Although not a business-critical requirement, the client saw the benefit of this added protection and the investment fitted with the organisation’s commitment to continuous improvement of its customer service operations.
Once the specification had been agreed, KUP was commissioned to install four WP 8000DPA UPS and three WP 9000DPA UPS, but the project was not without some notable challenges, as KUP’s Hardware Sales Director, Rob Taylor, explains
“At KUP we are very experienced at planning for a UPS installation with limited space or difficult access; however, this project presented a different type of challenge. Due to the critical nature of the uninterruptible power supplies we were replacing, we had just 48 hours, between 6pm on a Friday and 6pm Sunday, to install all seven UPS systems and the related switch gear. Not only that, we also had to decommission and remove the existing emergency power system and fit all new DC cabling throughout. Normally, switch out of just one UPS system could consume a whole weekend so this was a massive undertaking.
Demonstrating our commitment to agility and flexibility, we rose to the challenge by deploying two project managers, ten UPS battery and service engineers and an entire logistics team to operate two shifts and work around the clock. Despite the tight timescales, challenges with cabling, restricted accessways and working by headtorch and temporary lighting, the job was completed on time and without issue. The customer was so impressed they have already awarded us another power protection project.”
